The "frontier town" and the early quest The Tongueless Witness are shown in 3D, and an FPS-style view with WASD movement and mouse look is available. Variants such as Gensou Band and Tangband, plus Rogue in a Japanese-localized version, also run in it. As of October 5, 2026, some actions are unstable. It supports PC (Windows/Linux) and Android.
An unofficial frontend that converts a text-only roguelike into voxel 3D points to how far hobbyist tooling can rework a decades-old freeware game, while the crash and spell-learning bugs show it is still an unfinished build.

The frontend is not limited to Hengband. Variants including Gensou Band and Tangband, and Rogue in a Japanese-localized version, can also be played through it, with the same option to switch to an FPS-style viewpoint. In Hengband proper, the starting frontier town is drawn as a town with more width than the text display suggests, and the early quest The Tongueless Witness is rendered in 3D. A minimap makes enemies easier to pick out. The build is still rough: as of October 5, 2026, a magic user trying to learn a spell from a spellbook fails to work correctly, and buying an item from a shop freezes.

An unofficial frontend renders Hengband in voxel 3D with HD-2D styling, and it also runs Gensou Band, Tangband, and a Japanese-localized Rogue.
