The conversation takes in the Science SARU Ghost in the Shell series, the upcoming Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, and a 4K theatrical run of 1988's Akira, which prompted the topic after Lucas caught it on the big screen. The column runs as an op-ed and carries the outlet's standard disclaimer about contributor views.
The column grounds its genre argument in active release activity rather than nostalgia: a new Ghost in the Shell series, a Cyberpunk: Edgerunners continuation, and Akira back in theaters on 4K give the discussion a current hook.

The chatlog opens on a dedication, then moves quickly to the reason the topic came up: a theatrical screening of Akira in 4K. Sylvia says the film felt contemporary on this viewing, pointing to mass protests over unemployment and a government that treats its citizens as an adversary.

From there the two hosts widen the frame. The Science SARU Ghost in the Shell series and the upcoming Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 are named as part of a run of new and returning cyberpunk entries. Availability is noted for the older titles: Crunchyroll streams Akira, Netflix streams Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Amazon Prime streams Ghost in the Shell, and the Criterion Channel streams Evangelion.

Akira's 4K run gave Lucas the on-ramp, but this column's real subject is timing: Science SARU's Ghost in the Shell and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 are both arriving after the futures they warned about already happened.
The cyberpunk conversation is easier to have after the dates pass. Science SARU's Ghost in the Shell and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 now test prophecy in hindsight.
The column's hook is a 4K Akira screening, but the timing is what carries it: Science SARU's Ghost in the Shell and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 land after the years cyberpunk spent warning us about. That gap between prediction and release date is the actual subject.
This Week in Anime spends its latest column on the question of whether cyberpunk is prophetic. Lucas says a theatrical 4K screening of Akira pushed him to suggest the topic, and the discussion notes the Science SARU Ghost in the Shell series and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 among current and upcoming entries. Streaming availability for the older titles is listed for Crunchyroll, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and the Criterion Channel.
[{"source":"Anime News Network","url":"https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/this-week-in-anime/2026-09-22/.242036","title":"This Week in Anime: The Prophetic Visions of Cyberpunk Anime\
{"anime_titles":[],"manga_titles":[],"work_titles":[],"studios":[],"people":[],"type":"op_ed","domain":"anime","is_roundup":false}
