The episode sets his view of the relationship against hers, then moves the two toward overlap in a park heart-to-heart where years of unspoken frustration come out. It drew a community score of 3.9 from the review's readers.
The show has carried Igarashi's breakup with Koyuki as emotional baggage without getting inside his head, so an episode that splits the blame between his projection and her habit of hiding behind excuses changes what the series can do with both of them.

The flashback gives Igarashi his own read on the relationship, and it does not flatter him. He went along casually, paid no attention to how badly Koyuki was being bullied, and broke her boundaries while calling it the normal thing to do. He is also the most normal teenager in the show, not manipulative and not carrying much trauma.

Koyuki does not come out clean either. Her arc is about hiding her emotions too well and taking any excuse not to speak up. She is comfortable enough now to get into a verbal slugfest with Igarashi at the park, which the review notes as proof of how far she has come.

Igarashi's return gives The Ramparts of Ice a second account of the same breakup, and the park scene works because the two accounts are allowed to overlap instead of one winning.
The Ramparts of Ice hands Igarashi his own account of the breakup, so episode 18 argues with Koyuki's version before the park scene lets both stand.
The Ramparts of Ice spends episode 18 on Igarashi's side of the breakup, then stages the park talk so his account and Koyuki's sit together. The episode's structure treats the split as two partial records rather than one correct version.
Episode 18 of The Ramparts of Ice (TV 2) finally gets inside Igarashi's head, showing his casual, inattentive view of the relationship with Koyuki and pairing it with her own habit of hiding behind excuses. The two air years of frustration in a park conversation.
