The 15-inch laptop runs NVIDIA's RTX Spark N1X SoC with unified memory from 24GB to 128GB, and its cooling capacity is 2.5 times that of existing Surface devices. Release is October 16, 2026, and preorders have begun.
Because memory and VRAM are unified, the memory tier a buyer picks sets the ceiling on the local AI work the machine can do, which puts the 48GB question at the center of the purchase rather than the CPU clock.

Preorders for the Surface Laptop Ultra opened ahead of an October 16 release, and the top-end configuration was already gone by 5:00 AM on October 8, according to the report. The laptop is 15 inches with a mini-LED PixelSense Ultra display rated at a 2000-nit peak, about 19mm thick including rubber feet, and about 2kg. Two lines are offered: an 18-core CPU with a 5120-core GPU starting at 513,480 yen including tax (2,599 dollars in North America), and a 20-core CPU with a 6144-core GPU starting at 707,080 yen including tax (3,699 dollars in North America). Storage was limited to a 1TB SSD.

Microsoft's 24GB base tier on the Surface Laptop Ultra is the part worth watching: unified memory doubles as VRAM for the RTX Spark N1X, so the entry config sets the floor for what local models buyers can actually run.
Surface Laptop Ultra's 24GB floor matters because unified memory doubles as VRAM for the RTX Spark N1X. The entry tier defines what local models run.
Surface Laptop Ultra's memory range runs 24GB to 128GB, but the base tier is the number that decides what local AI buyers can do. Unified memory on the RTX Spark N1X doubles as VRAM, so 24GB is a shared budget, not headroom. The top tier sells the promise; the bottom tier sets the limit.
Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop Ultra and the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box at its Surface October 2026 event, with release set for October 16.
