Riliu wakes among strangers who rescued him from the river, and the episode separates him from Jowy, who ends up in a parallel situation in enemy territory. Riliu learns the attack on the Unicorn Youth Brigade was a false flag by the Highland Kingdom's crown prince, not the City-States of Jowston.
The adaptation splits Riliu and Jowy at the start so the premiere can stage both sides of the war as ordinary soldiers doing what they are told, which gives the series an argument rather than a plot recap.

The premiere runs fifty minutes, and it spends much of that time in cells rather than in the field. Riliu wakes among the strangers who pulled him from the river, then fights for his life when he realizes the people who saved him are the enemy. The episode contrasts the Highland Kingdom's willingness to destroy its own soldiers with City-State troops who refuse to kill prisoners and feed them hot meals.

Suikoden: The Anime gives Riliu the false flag knowledge early.
