Valve's own figure was 43,501,449, while SteamDB put the peak at 43,505,724, with 14,464,385 people actually in games at that moment. The previous mark, 42,686,616, was set in March of this year. Counter-Strike 2 led the past 24 hours at 1,404,227 players.
The record arrives about half a year after the March peak, and the games carrying it are a mix of long-running staples and new releases like AION 2 and WARDOGS rather than one title alone.

The peak count comes about half a year after the 42,686,616 set in March, and just over 1.8 million above the 41,666,455 recorded in the same period last year. SteamDB's separate tally of people actually in a game at that moment was 14,464,385, so the headline number includes clients left open away from play. Only 14.4 million were in games at that moment, and AION2 plus WARDOGS pulled much of that. The gap between client open and controller in hand is where the record lives.
Steam recorded an all-time high of roughly 43.5 million concurrent users on October 11, up from the 42,686,616 logged in March.
