The console is a color variant of the existing PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Japan-Only, which launched in 2025, and swaps the white shell for an all-black finish on the console cover and bundled DualSense controller. Because it is the Digital Edition with no disc drive, playing packaged software requires a separately sold disc drive. Sony will ship a matching Disc Drive Midnight Black on the same day for 11,980 yen including tax. Preorders for both products begin October 20 at PlayStation retailers and e-commerce sites in Japan. The console can only be used with a PlayStation account whose console language is set to Japanese and whose Country/Region is set to Japan. Buyers who purchase an eligible PS5 and apply by March 31, 2027 get a manufacturer warranty extended from one year to two years.
The black variant keeps the same 55,000 yen price as the white Japan-only model, so Sony is selling the color change at parity rather than charging a premium for it, and the simultaneous 11,980 yen disc drive release gives disc-owning buyers a first-party path back.

The basic hardware inside the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black Japan-Only is unchanged from the model already on sale in Japan: an 8-core, 16-thread AMD CPU, a GPU based on the RDNA architecture, 16GB of main memory, and an 825GB internal SSD. The Midnight Black name covers the console cover and the included DualSense, both finished in black.

The region and language restriction is the same as the white Japan-only edition: the system works only with a PlayStation account set to console language Japanese and Country/Region Japan. Buyers who want to run packaged games need the Disc Drive Midnight Black, which Sony confirmed for the same November 19 date at 11,980 yen including tax. Preorders open October 20 through PlayStation retailers and online shops inside Japan. The new model also qualifies for the current promotion that extends the standard one-year manufacturer warranty to two years for customers who buy an eligible PS5 and apply by March 31, 2027.

The PS5 Digital Edition Midnight Black Japan-Only keeps the same 55,000 yen price as the white Japan-only model, and the matching Disc Drive Midnight Black lands the same day at 11,980 yen. Preorders open October 20.
Black shell, same 55,000 yen. Sony's Midnight Black Japan-only PS5 lands November 19, but it is Digital Edition only, so packaged games still need the separately sold 11,980 yen disc drive.
Sony has dated a black color variant of its Japan-only PS5 Digital Edition for November 19 at 55,000 yen, unchanged from the white model's price.
