Fortune says the figure holds unless Microsoft absorbs part of the hardware cost. Project Helix is built around a custom AMD SoC and is positioned closer to a high-performance gaming PC.
The reported price is more than double the current high-end Xbox Series X, and Microsoft has already warned about rising component costs, so any launch plan now depends on how much of the hardware bill the company is willing to eat.

Fortune's figure comes with a caveat: unless Microsoft decides to absorb part of the cost, retail lands at $1,200 to $1,800. The comparison is stark, since the 1TB Xbox Series X with a disc drive is listed at 117,980 yen including tax ($799.99 in the US).

Microsoft has said Project Helix will play the Xbox games and PC games owners already have, so the device could also be judged as a high-performance gaming PC rather than a console.
