Asked on Bluesky about the cause, the platform replied "Take a guess" with a crying-face and robot emoji. As of November 2, 141,716 of 1,793,704 games carry the AI Generated tag, and download and purchase numbers have not doubled.
The rise lands on a platform where submissions generally require no review and 93% of works are free, so a doubling of game pages has not produced a matching rise in downloads or purchases.

New game pages began climbing sharply from late September, and replies to itch.io's post point to the release of Claude Opus 5.5 on September 22 as a possible cause. itch.io did not directly comment on the reason. Only sellers of paid games must pass review to appear in search and listings; free submissions generally are not reviewed. The same pattern shows on Steam, where Steam Next Fest participation rose from about 4,300 works in June to about 7,300 in October.
