The studio says the downsizing is a response to harsh market conditions and a move toward long-term sustainability. Studio staff and SCUM development team members are affected; the number has not been disclosed. Gamepires says the decision is a business one and not a reflection on the team's work, and that SCUM development, updates and additional content will continue.","whyItMatters":"The cuts land months after Gamepires was reported in February 2026 as acquired by Splash Damage, and with no statement yet from the new owner, the studio is absorbing the reduction on its own account while the game it is known for keeps running.","webCardHtml":"\u003cp\u003eThe announcement came from the SCUM account rather than from Splash Damage, which was reported in February 2026 as acquiring the studio. Gamepires says the layoffs are a business decision and not a judgment on the affected staff, and thanks them for their contributions. How many positions are going has not been disclosed. SCUM, which entered Steam Early Access on August 30, 2018 and moved to its full version on June 17, 2025, will keep receiving updates and additional content. At the time of the article, Splash Damage had said nothing about the cuts.\u003c/p\u003e","blueskyPost":"Gamepires is cutting staff while promising SCUM updates keep coming. The people who built the live pipeline are the ones being let go, and live games need exactly that labor most.","twitterPost":"Gamepires is cutting the staff who keep SCUM's live pipeline running while promising the updates will not stop.","threadsPost":"Gamepires frames the layoffs as a business decision while SCUM's update cadence stays the goal. The staff being cut are the ones who build and maintain that live pipeline, so the sustainability claim and the content promise are pulling in opposite directions.","newsletterBlurb":"Gamepires announced layoffs on the official SCUM X account, saying the downsizing answers harsh market conditions and is meant to keep the studio going long term. Studio members and the SCUM development team are among those affected, and no number was given. SCUM development continues with more updates and content planned. Splash Damage, reported in February 2026 as acquiring the studio, has not commented.","attributionJson":"[{\"source\":\"Game Spark\",\"url\":\"http://www.gamespark.jp/article/2026/10/14/173605.html\",\"title\":\"SCUM Developer Gamepires Announces Studio Downsizing and Layoffs-Development Team Reduced, But Development Will Continue\"}]","lintFlagsJson":null,"lintHits":0,"costUsd":0,"inputTokens":4729,"outputTokens":612,"status":"published","repairAttempts":0,"nextRepairAt":null,"factsAttemptedAt":1791992242,"createdAt":"2026-10-14T15:32:55.000Z","publishedAt":"2026-10-14T15:36:08.000Z","updatedAt":"2026-10-14T15:36:08.000Z"},"cluster":{"id":"c_1193de0496a5d114bbfebd78","canonicalTitle":"『SCUM』開発のGamepiresがスタジオ規模縮小\u0026レイオフ発表―開発メンバー削減も今後も開発は継続","representativeArticleId":"a_526aeb7fabc12a22ca76483c","sourceCount":1,"writtenSourceCount":1,"writeAttempts":0,"isSolo":true,"entitiesJson":"{\"anime_titles\":[],\"manga_titles\":[],\"work_titles\":[\"SCUM\"],\"studios\":[\"Gamepires\"],\"people\":[],\"type\":\"business\",\"domain\":\"games\",\"is_roundup\":false}","contentType":"news","status":"published","firstSeenAt":"2026-10-14T14:27:19.000Z","lastSeenAt":"2026-10-14T14:27:19.000Z","updatedAt":"2026-10-14T15:36:06.000Z"},"attribution":[{"source":"Game Spark","url":"http://www.gamespark.jp/article/2026/10/14/173605.html","title":"『SCUM』開発のGamepiresがスタジオ規模縮小\u0026レイオフ発表―開発メンバー削減も今後も開発は継続"}],"entities":{"anime_titles":[],"manga_titles":[],"work_titles":["SCUM"],"studios":["Gamepires"],"people":[],"type":"business","domain":"games","is_roundup":false},"keyFacts":null}
