An employee found a recording device in the USB port behind a television in the San Francisco executive meeting room around September 30, 2026. OpenAI says no theft or removal of information has been confirmed.
The complaint describes a months-long surveillance effort aimed at a room where OpenAI discusses confidential technical, commercial, and strategic material, and it lands as the company faces scrutiny over how it protects the data it holds.

The device was wrapped in toilet paper and plugged into the USB port on the back of a television in the executive meeting room. Its contents were encrypted. OpenAI's internal investigation found the suspect approached the room on multiple occasions before the device was discovered, without permission to enter it or join the meetings held there.

The complaint also points to chatbot prompts sent between September 24 and 30 from an account tied to the suspect's spouse, covering ways to build a persistent recording device, customize Wi-Fi connectivity, optimize audio and real-time interception, and encrypt an SD card.

OpenAI hired Abdulrahman Alfouzan in July 2025, then says it cannot confirm any information was removed. A device in an executive room still leaves the question of what it recorded while it sat there.
OpenAI says no information theft is confirmed. The device was found in the executive meeting room, which is where the unconfirmed part matters most.
OpenAI's own statement draws the line at theft or removal: neither is confirmed. Abdulrahman Alfouzan was hired in July 2025 and the device sat behind a television in the executive meeting room, so the unanswered part is what it captured, not whether it existed.
The Justice Department has charged Abdulrahman Alfouzan, an OpenAI engineer, with intercepting or attempting to intercept conversations after a recording device was found behind a television in the company's San Francisco executive meeting room. The complaint describes a search for office addresses, room capacity, and executive schedules, plus chatbot prompts about building and encrypting a recording device. OpenAI says no theft or removal of information has been confirmed.
[{"source":"GIGAZINE","url":"https://gigazine.net/news/20261014-openai-employee-arrested-by-fbi/","title":"FBI Arrests OpenAI Employee Suspected of Planting Listening Device in Executive Meeting Room\
{"anime_titles":[],"manga_titles":[],"work_titles":[],"studios":[],"people":[],"type":"news","domain":"other","is_roundup":false}
