Creators such as Rin00yu, imlynzzz, and rzkillx tag the videos with jirai kei, a fashion subculture the piece links to mental illness. The essay reads Chainsmoker Cat and jirai kei aesthetics against sanitized depictions of mental illness.
The piece argues that jirai kei and messy vlogs put the unappealing side of mental illness on camera alongside a pretty aesthetic, where most media show only a cleaned-up version.

The essay points to the recurring production tics of the form: pale beauty filters, ambient music low enough to keep bedsheet rustle and nail clicks audible, and cigarettes tucked into Iqos devices. Some videos leave pixelated self-harm scars, daily medication, or captions about disliking work and social life in frame.

Lettuce traces the jirai kei tag to jirai onna, a pejorative for women with mood disorders such as borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder, and quotes the NUFS Times on the stereotype that people drawn to the style are menhera. The writer then places their own anxiety, depression, and agoraphobia against the bedrooms on screen.

Chainsmoker Cat reduces a day to coffee, a cigarette, and pale filters. The essay treats that routine as mental health representation, which puts the burden on format, not diagnosis.
Chainsmoker Cat turns a solitary day into coffee, cigarettes, and pale filters. Mental health gets a format, not a diagnosis.
Chainsmoker Cat and the jirai kei videos from Rin00yu and imlynzzz show a day as coffee, cigarettes, and pale filters. They represent mental health through routine and mood, which leaves the condition unspoken and the presentation doing the work.
An Anime Herald essay by Lettuce examines Japanese messy vlogs on TikTok, where faceless creators tag footage of solitary, low-energy days with jirai kei. The piece sets that aesthetic against the sanitized mental illness portrayals common in media, and against Chainsmoker Cat. The writer connects the videos to their own anxiety, depression, and agoraphobia.
[{"source":"Anime Herald","url":"https://animeherald.com/2026/10/17/chainsmoker-cat-jirai-kei-and-japanese-messy-vlogs-the-spectrum-of-mental-health-representation/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=chainsmoker-cat-jirai-kei-and-japanese-messy-vlogs-the-spectrum-of-mental-health-representation","title":"Chainsmoker Cat, Jirai Kei, and Japanese Messy Vlogs: The Spectrum of Mental Health Representation\
{"anime_titles":[],"manga_titles":[],"work_titles":["Chainsmoker Cat","Jirai Kei"],"studios":[],"people":[],"type":"op_ed","domain":"manga","is_roundup":false
https://animeherald.com/2026/10/17/chainsmoker-cat-jirai-kei-and-japanese-messy-vlogs-the-spectrum-of-mental-health-representation/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=chainsmoker-cat-jirai-kei-and-japanese-messy-vlogs-the-spectrum-of-mental-health-representation
["Chainsmoker Cat","Jirai Kei
