The retro-futuristic noir follows Raymond Gunn, the last human detective in the city of Metropia. Sam Rockwell voices Raymond, Scarlett Johansson plays Venus Nova, and Tom Waits voices the one-eyed alien Ai-Ra.
Netflix is giving Bird's long-gestating noir pastiche a theatrical window before streaming, a pattern the service has used for awards-facing animation, and the star voice cast plus Bird's name are the selling points rather than franchise recognition.

The key visual, trailer, and stills arrived alongside the date announcement. Venus Nova, voiced by Johansson, has white hair in the key visual. Tom Waits plays Ai-Ra, Ray's one-eyed alien partner. Bird has been developing the project for 30 years.

Ray Gunn's December 4 theatrical window runs two weeks before Netflix, which puts the film's opening weekend in the hands of theaters Netflix does not own.
Ray Gunn opens in theaters December 4, two weeks before Netflix.
